Phycomycin is effective both as an algaecide (eliminating existing blue-green algae infestations) and as an algaestat (i.e., retarding and preventing new growth). It works quickly, and neither it nor its byproducts (hydrogen peroxide and oxygen) linger in the ecosystem.
Phycomycin's active ingredient, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, creates a powerful oxidation reaction that destroys algal cell membranes and chlorophyll, providing immediate control of algae. Fast-acting (within 60 seconds of application), it leaves behind no harmful residues and adds 13% bio-available oxygen to the water. See chart below. Can also be applied as a spot or perimeter treatment.

Phycomycin Application Rates
Rates for Specific Algae Problems
|Step One||Shock Treatment
|Apply 15-40 lbs./acre-foot** of water||Spot Treatments*||20-50 lbs./acre-foot of water|
|Step Two||Maintenance Treatments
Every 2-4 weeks.
|Apply 8-25 lbs./acre-foot of water||Planktonic Blue-Green Algae Blooms||9-30 lbs./acre-foot of water|
|Step Three||Spot Treatment
As needed. Can be applied to perimeter only.
|Apply 20-50 lbs./acre-foot of water||Filamentous Algae Blooms||50-90 lbs./acre-foot of water|
**Acre/feet are calculated as surface acres of pond X average depth. Example: 148 ft. x 148 ft. = 0.5 acres. Average depth 4 ft. Acre/feet = 0.5 acres X 4 ft. = 2 acre/ft.
Safe for Sensitive Fish Species
When used at the labeled rates, Phycomycin will not harm fish (including sensitive fish such as rainbow trout), plants or aquatic life. Phycomycin is labeled for use up to 90 lbs. per acre foot of water. EPA approved and NSF/ANSI Standard 60 certified for drinking water application.
For Best Results
Begin application in spring as water temperature warms to 60º F and above. Early treatment when growth first appears or begins to create a nuisance will reduce the amount of Phycomycin you will need. Early treatment will also reduce the amount of dead growth.
Heavy, out of control growth may require more than one application or physical removal to gain control. For best results, use under conditions of minimal water flow. Apply early on the morning of a calm, sunny day.
*All pesticides can be harmful to health and the environment if misused. Read the label and follow directions. Consult with your local regulatory agency before applying herbicides and algaecides to public waters. There are herbicides from other states that are either not licensed in Wisconsin or Illinois, or are not recommended by ABI.
A WI DNR Aquatic Plant Control Permit or DATCP Fish Farm License is required in WI in order to apply algaecides or herbicides. In addition ponds and lakes with overflows not contained on the property are required to obtain a WPDES permit. Illinois Residents are required to obtain NPDES permits through the Illinois EPA.
In order to apply chemicals in liquid form within Wisconsin, the applicator must be licensed with the State.
Recommendations of pesticide or treatments for specific algae or aquatic plants are provided for general information purposes only - no warranties are expressed or implied.
